Callistemon citrinus 'Splendens'


Callistemon citrinus 'Splendens' is one of the flowering plant in the world. It also known as Crimson Bottlebrush, Red Bottlebrush, and Lemon Bottlebrush It is a shrub in the family Myrtaceae. This species native to south-eastern Australia.

The common name of this plant is "bottlebrush", perfectly describes this evergreen plant's bright red flower spikes. Some bird love this flowers, like hummingbirds. Callistemon citrinus is hardier than most bottlebrushes. The flowers are followed by small, woody capsules that look like bead bracelets on the bark, and which last for years. Offered as a shrub, bottlebrush can be trained as a tree to 15-feet or espaliered as a quick wall cover. It makes a nice screen or tall unclipped hedge. Pruning to develop several trunks and removing some lower branches can create a fine small specimen tree.

Callistemon citrinus have height about 10 to 15 feet and spread 10 to 15 feet. The form of crown (corolla) is uniform (symmetrical), the shape is upright/erect and round, the density is moderate. This plant have moderate growth rate and have fine texture. The leaf is evergreen and if it fall, we will see that no color change in the leaf. It have alternate arrangement, a simple type, the margin is entire, the shape is lanceolate, linear the venation is pinnate and the blade lenght is less then 2 inches, 2 to 4 inches. This plant have red and very showy flower color. It have brown and round fruit that covering by dry or hard fruit cover. The fruit does not attract wildlife, showy, fruit/leaves not make a litter problem.

Callistemon citrinus is a good choice for a place that have spot offering full sun, it will adapt to a variety of soils. This plant very drought-tolerant once established, bottlebrush plant tolerates any soil except poorly alkaline, or poorly drained. Fertilize regularly is necessary to maintain good color flower and dark green leaf. The trunk need to be removed periodically to maintain tree form.
